Diabetes 101

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a chronic (long-lasting) health condition that affects how your body turns food into energy.

How does the body normally process food?

Your body breaks down most of the food you eat into sugar (glucose) and releases it into your bloodstream. When your blood sugar goes up, it signals your pancreas to release insulin. Insulin acts like a key to let the blood sugar into your body’s cells for use as energy.

How does diabetes affect the body?

With diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough insulin or can’t use it as well as it should. When there isn’t enough insulin or cells stop responding to insulin, too much blood sugar stays in your bloodstream. Over time, that can cause serious health problems, such as heart disease, vision loss, and kidney disease.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I HAVE DIABETES?

We recommend you schedule an appointment for a checkup where we can run tests on your blood and other vitals. From there, we can provide recommendations to help you navigate care you might need. Read more about diabetes here.

Retinal eye screenings

CHCSCT offers an in-house Retinal Eye Screening Program designed to provide preventative eye screenings for adult patients with an active diabetes diagnosis.

The program includes a retinal eye examination to detect early signs of diabetic retinopathy, a common complication of diabetes affecting the eyes.

As part of our commitment to community health, the screenings are entirely free of charge.

By offering this program, we aim to promote early detection and proactive management of eye-related complications for our diabetic patients.
