Annual Exams

Nurse practitioner with female patient for an annual exam at Community Health Centers of South Central Texas

Annual exams are preventive checkups to identify potential health issues early. This can include a general health review and blood tests, as well as other screenings depending on your age and health history.

Why are Annual Exams Important?

Regular checkups are important because they help catch health issues early when they’re easier to treat. They are also a good time for you to ask your doctor any health questions you have.

For Kids, the checkup might include:

  • Updated vaccinations
  • Discussions about overall health
  • Growth and development assessment (measuring height, weight, and head circumference)
  • Physical development evaluation (examining the body systems)
  • Vision and hearing screening

For adults, this exam might include:

  • Talk about your health history.
  • Check your blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature.
  • Look at your body for problems.
  • Test your blood for diabetes and other problems.
  • Get screened for cancer (if you are at risk).
  • Talk about how to stay healthy.

For Older Adults (Seniors):

  • Chronic disease: The doctor checks and manages your health conditions.
  • Bone health: The doctor can refer out to check bone health and screens for osteoporosis.
  • Memory Assessment: The doctor checks your memory and thinking.
  • Medications: The doctor checks your medications and makes adjustments if needed.
  • Fall Risk Assessment: The doctor checks your balance, mobility, and home safety to prevent falls.
  • Social Support: The doctor checks your social and emotional well-being and provides information on community resources.

The specific services during an annual exam vary. We can provide ongoing care, medications, and referrals.
