Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a time to honor survivors, educate families, and remind our communities of the power of early prevention. The American Cancer Society (ACS) tells us that 1 in 8 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. The good news is that when breast cancer is found early, the five-year survival rate is over 99 percent.

At Community Health Centers of South Central Texas (CHCSCT), we believe every woman deserves compassionate care and the screenings that save lives. Keep reading to learn more about breast cancer, the importance of preventative screenings, and the services we provide to help protect you and your loved ones.
What Is Breast Cancer?
Breast cancer happens when cells in the breast grow abnormally and form a tumor. According to the ACS, it is the most common cancer in women worldwide, with over 2.3 million women being affected each year.
The good news is that early detection saves millions of lives. Routine breast exams and mammograms can catch cancer in its earliest stages, when treatment is most effective.
What Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in 1985 and has grown into an international campaign to:
- Support people diagnosed with breast cancer
- Educate about risk factors and prevention
- Encourage regular screenings starting at age 40, or earlier if you are at higher risk
- Fund research and new treatments
More Special Dates in October :
- Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day – October 13, 2025
About 168,000 women in the United States live with metastatic breast cancer, a number expected to rise to 246,000 by 2030. This day brings attention to the urgent need for more research and treatments. - National Mammography Day – October 17, 2025
Recognized by the U.S. government, this day reminds women to schedule their annual mammogram. CHCSCT provides clinical breast exams and connects eligible patients to free or low-cost mammograms through the Breast and Cervical Cancer Services (BCCS) program. To schedule your exam call 800-343-1577 or visit our website to find a clinic near you! - Men’s Breast Cancer Awareness Week – October 17–23, 2025
While rare, about 2,800 men in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Awareness helps break stigma and encourages early detection for men, trans men, and non-binary people.
Top 5 Preventive Health Screenings

Preventive care is powerful. The ACS reminds us that half of U.S. women who develop breast cancer are 62 years of age or younger when they are diagnosed. Here are five screenings every woman should prioritize:
- Mammogram
A mammogram is an x-ray picture of the breast that detects breast cancer early. Recommended annually starting at age 40, or earlier if you have higher risk. - Pap Smear and HPV Test
Screens for cervical cancer. These tests usually begin at age 21 and can prevent cancer by detecting abnormal cells early. - Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Checks
Protects heart health. Regular screenings reduce risks of stroke and heart disease, which is the leading cause of death in women. - Blood Sugar Screening
Helps prevent diabetes and related complications. Early detection supports healthier long-term outcomes. - Annual Well-Woman Exam
A comprehensive visit that ties it all together, including reproductive health, menopause management, and preventive counseling.
At CHCSCT, we always encourage early prevention through routine care and access to specialized screenings. Here are the breast health services we provide to help detect cancer early and keep women healthy:
- Well-Woman Exams – Routine check-ups with preventive screenings for breast cancer, cervical cancer, and reproductive health issues
