Vaccine Schedules: Why Timing Matters

Spring is the perfect time to check your child’s immunization records before the busy “back-to-school” season begins. At Community Health Centers of South Central Texas, we follow the CDC Child and Adolescent Vaccine Schedule to provide a complete roadmap for your child’s health. These vaccines are carefully timed to protect children when they are most vulnerable to specific diseases. By following this schedule, you can help your child build a strong immune system from infancy through their teenage years.
All Recommended Vaccines Available at Our Clinics
Our team provides the full range of CDC-recommended vaccines for every stage of your child’s life. (Click here to download the full information in a PDF version)
-
- Early Childhood: We offer the foundational series for DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Whooping Cough), Polio, Hepatitis A & B, Chickenpox (Varicella), and MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella).
- Adolescents: We provide necessary boosters for Tdap, as well as HPV and Meningitis.
- Note: DTaP vs. Tdap. You might notice that your toddler gets “DTaP” while your teenager gets “Tdap.” While they protect against the same diseases, DTaP is the full-strength version for young children building their first wall of defense. Tdap is a booster designed specifically for adolescents and adults to maintain that protection over time.
- Annual Care: We offer yearly protection with Flu and Pneumonia shots.
Why Second Vaccine Doses & Boosters Matter

As you look at the list above, it is important to remember that many of these vaccines require a first and second dose (and sometimes boosters) to be fully effective. Think of the first dose as the “introduction” to the immune system, while the following doses act as a “reminder” to the body on how to fight off germs. This series is what guarantees your child has long-term, high-level protection as they grow.
To help you track these milestones, refer to the CDC Immunization Schedule Chart. It shows exactly when these critical first and second doses are recommended.
Get Get More Than Just Immunizations
A vaccine appointment at CHCSCT is also a full wellness checkup. While we update your child’s records, our pediatricians and nurses also monitor:
- Physical Growth: Height, weight, and development tracking.
- On-Site Lab Work: If needed, our 8 locations have on-site labs for quick blood counts or nutrition panels.
- Total Well-being: We offer guidance on behavior, nutrition, and social health to ensure your child is thriving mentally and emotionally.
Frequently Asked Questions About Vaccinations

Why does my child need so many vaccines at once?
Research shows that a child’s immune system is highly resilient. Giving multiple vaccines during one visit is safe and protects them as early as possible. Children should receive their vaccines promptly to provide protection during the vulnerable early months of their lives. Additionally, giving several shots at the same time means fewer office visits. This saves parents time and money and can be less traumatic for the child.
What are the common side effects?
Most children only experience mild symptoms, such as a sore arm, a slight fuss, or a low-grade fever. These are signs that the body is successfully building protection and usually disappear within 48 hours.
